Enable Wifi in Dell Vostro 14 3000 Series with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Ubuntu 14.04LTS is the latest LTS release available. I had Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed in my Dell Vostro. There is no option available for immediate upgrade to ubuntu 14.04LTS from 12.04LTS. Hence I decided to format and install fresh.

There has always been considerable improvement in every new release of Ubuntu, but network connectivity has always been an obstacle while using Ubuntu releases.

Below are the steps to enable the WIFI drivers.

1. Check if valid WIFI adapter is available:

$ sudo lshw -C network
 *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
       vendor: Broadcom Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:06:00.0
       logical name: wlan0
       version: 01
       serial: 9c:d2:1e:e5:47:3f
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless
       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=wl0 driverversion=6.30.223.141 (r415941) latency=0 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abg
       resources: irq:18 memory:f7900000-f7907fff
  *-network
       description: Ethernet interface

       vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:07:00.0
       logical name: eth0
       version: 0c
       serial: b8:2a:72:ac:31:fa
       size: 100Mbit/s
       capacity: 1Gbit/s
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix vpd bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation
       configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=r8169 driverversion=2.3LK-NAPI duplex=full firmware=rtl8168g-2_0.0.1 02/06/13 ip=192.168.1.4 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes port=MII speed=100Mbit/s
       resources: irq:58 ioport:e000(size=256) memory:f7800000-f7800fff memory:f2100000-f2103fff

2. Check if WIFI is enabled:

$wpconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

vboxnet0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Solution:

Identify your Brodcom chipset family:

$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4
output:
06:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4365] (rev 01)

4. Install STA Drivers

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Now reboot the system to see your WIFI enabled.

For it to be effective without reboot run the below commands:

sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl
sudo modprobe wl

Bitcoins – New Trend in Virtual Currency Market

Image

Bitcoin is a virtual and digital version of cash that is emerging as a global payment platform and that can be used through smart phones, tablets, and other devices. Bitcoin, which is a product of open source intelligence using peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks, has the potential to change how millions of people around the world conduct their business.

What makes Bitcoin unique is that there’s a record as to who possesses it, and there’s a network that records transactions. Additionally, there is no way to increase the number of Bitcoins in existence, which is not the case in other currencies, like the U.S. currency, which the treasury can just print more if needed.

The value of a Bitcoin does fluctuate with the markets. Similar to stocks, to invest in Bitcoins all you want to do the same thing you do is to buy low and sell high. But remember, all currencies fluctuate in value on a daily basis, so that’s not unique to Bitcoin.

Well, the future of Bitcoin!! Bitcoin’s future represents a soft trend—it is not a sure thing. But the idea of a digital virtual currency that is the closest thing to cash becoming part of our everyday reality in the near future represents a Hard Trend—it will happen.

So the next time you’re ready to make a purchase online, don’t be surprised if you see a Bitcoin option for payment. Digital currency as a long-term Hard Trend is a game changer and Bitcoin is the trend is now in motion.

10 Lessons from Einstein

Einstein, the father of modern physics  is one of the favorite personality for majority of high school folks not just because of his  mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2   but also because of his childhood stories which they have to read because those are the lessons as a part of the curriculum.I personally became a crazy fan of Einstein after reading the book “At The Speed of Light” by Prof.Chandrashekar.

Knowingly or unknowingly all of us would have read about the stories related relativity (Ex:Freely Falling Lift, Space Journey of Twin sisters, etc).Einstein has truly made a huge impact on many young talented folks.Just want to share few of the lessons from Einstein to all my fellow fans of the ‘Man of Relativity’ in accordance to his 133th birthday on March 14.

1. Follow Your Curiosity “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

2. Perseverance is Priceless “It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

3. Focus on the Present “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”

4. The Imagination is Powerful “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

5. Make Mistakes “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

6. Live in the Moment “I never think of the future – it comes soon enough.”

7. Create Value “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

8. Don’t be repetitive “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

9. Knowledge Comes From Experience “Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience.”

10. Learn the Rules and Then Play Better “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”

My School..

Hello everyone. My name is Shravanthi, this is the first time i am blogging online though i am a chronic internet user. As it is my first post i want to start with something which is reason for my today’s existence. To begin with, my school Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Hassan.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya are Indian schools for talented children and form a part of the system of gifted education. The objectives of the scheme are to provide good quality modern education to the children predominantly from rural areas, without regard to their family’s socio-economic condition.

First established in 1985, they are the brain child of the former Prime Minister, Late. Rajiv Gandhi to find and foster talented children from the rural parts of India. They were formerly named as Navodaya Vidyalayas and renamed later as ‘Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas’ in the birth-centenary year of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India. Navodaya Vidyalayas are located all over the country, except in  Tamil Nadu. There are approximately 557 JNVs across India as of now. They offer free education to all students who get selected through the admission process which includes an All India Entrance Exam, held at district level.

Click here to know more about Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in India.

You might be wondering what is so special in my school. These are the schools which are responsible for the existence of so many lives. In my first post i just wanted to express my gratitude to all those millions of people who had worked and who have been working to support children from remote places of India and for being responsible in shaping a new future for millions of young minds.
